The Women's Legal Aid Centre (WLAC), is a voluntary, non-governmental, non-partisan and non-profit making organization. WLAC was registered in 1994 as a Company limited by guarantee under the Companies Act, Cap. 212 R.E of 2002. Before registration in November 1994, as an Independent autonomous entity, WLAC ran a Legal Aid Clinic which was known as SUWATA Legal Aid Scheme for women, operating under the umbrella of Women Economic Wing (Shirika la Uchumi la Wanawake Tanzania - SUWATA-1989).
